A lunchtime seminar at the Open University by Professor Michael Scott from the University of Warwick; 23rd May 2019.
“Despite a lack of interest in the impact of temenos boundary walls (and other walls within sanctuaries) on the ancient Greek ritual experience (in contrast to huge interest over the last 10 years in the impact of many other kinds of sanctuary architecture e.g. steps), this papers seeks to examine how that experience - in particular its visual, aural and olfactory aspects - would have been affected by high solid boundary and temple walls. The case study will be the Eleusinian mysteries and the sanctuary of Demeter at Eleusis, surrounded from the 6th century BC by high temenos walls and with, at its heart, the enclosed telesterion temple structure.”

The seminar will take place in Seminar Room 6 in The Open University Library. Come into the main glass door entrance, and turn left to find the lift and stairs to the second floor. There will be signs posted on the day.
